The animals of the deep are isolated from all else. Staying by themselves, in their own large, beautiful world. The Dahl’s Porpoise are one of the many beautiful creatures that roam around this world. They are black with white sections over their belly. They can weigh 400 pounds and be six feet long. They can be seen from Alaska to southern California. But, they are most commonly sighted around Victoria in the Straight of Juan de Fuca.
The Dahl’s Porpoise can live in a region called the salish seas. Some of that is an eight mile estuary called they Padilla Bay. It it mainly miles of mud flats and sea life. There is starfish, fish, shellfish, Orcas and our good friend the Dahl’s porpoise. The bay empties out into the ocean and is traveled by humans frequently walked on.
As we sailed through the San Juan Islands on the Cutty Sark they came. Off the starboard bow,(front left) they came in a pack. First one, two, three, then four came playing around, almost to say they were mocking us. They were just barley having their tail touch our bow, jumping all around as we watched them. The Dalh’s Porpoise are magnificent animals that can reach a speed of 35 miles per hour. We were going about 7 miles per hour so they could easily swim circles around us.
As they finally left, we sailed for about a half an hour. It was a beautiful day, and we were loving it. Then after seeing this very large boat by Sucia Island, our friends came back to say hello. They came and went, and came and went all day. It was very exciting for most of us, then we docked at Sucia Island. After our wonderful encounter, we sat back and spent the rest of our miraculous trip in awe!
