A Basic Instuctional Guide to Kayaking

Kayaking can be a fun and relaxing way to spend time. Though there is an emphasis on safety, kayaks are generally safer and more stable than people believe. Also, kayaks are capable of carrying large amounts of gear for extended trips. Finally, the different styles of kayaks are a good thing to consider when kayaking too.

Safety in kayaking is an easy thing to accomplish. There are just a few rules that will ensure an enjoyable trip for you and your friends. First, you should always wear a P.F.D. (personal flotation device). In the event of your boat capsizing, it will keep you afloat till you get back in or help arrives. Second, know the boat traffic rules. Technically, you have the right of way to all boats except commercial ones, but not everybody follows the rules. Third, know your limits. Do not try to accomplish more than you are capable of, that could end up as one of the most dangerous decisions you will ever make. Finally, always tell people where you are going and when you plan to arrive at your destination. It is also a good idea to travel with a partner.

Kayaks are a great way to go on extended camping trips and, you can get to many places that are only accessible with a boat. Also, because of the excessive storage space, you can store lots of things that you couldn’t take on things like backpacking or hiking trips. Though day trips are enjoyable, I would much rather take a longer voyage.

You should also consider the different styles of kayaks when you decide to take one out. Single and double kayaks are the most common, but triples are manufactured too. Doubles are slightly more efficient than singles and are probably better to begin with. Doubles are capable of attaining higher speeds than singles with less effort involved. I prefer singles because they allow you to be more solitary and I consider kayaking to be a relaxing sport that is often good for alone time. Your opinion may vary though and something else may suit you better.

Whether you are just beginning or fairly advanced, you can still have lots of fun kayaking. Just remember, to be safe know your limits and experiment a little with the kayak. Many kayaks are built differently and you should get a feel for them. Oh, and by the way, HAVE FUN!

Would you feel safe in as small a boat as a kayak in the middle of the ocean?
