The author talked about fishing line being a problem for the manatees. It reminded me of our efforts here around the Chesapeake Bay to keep fishing line and other trash out of osprey nests.
Fishing lines, hooks, and six-pack yokes find their way into nests, and they can strangle or maim the ospreys. The US Fish and Wildlife Service has mounted an anglers education program to help alert people to the fact that their trash ends up in unintended places and often hurts or kills osprey adults and young.
Posters, flyers, and handouts might help those who work and play around the water to realize where their trash ends up and the amount of damage it can cause.
