My feelings about captive breeding programs are that they are a necessary evil to insure their survival. The doom and gloom scenario is that this will be the only way that some of these species survive.
Preferrably, I would like to see a world in which humans adopt sustainable lifestyles on the planet that insure a place for these animals in their natural habitats.
It's not about preserving these creatures in preserves that only a few actually get to go see. It doesn't matter, for instance, that I may never physically go to some far-off location to see a panda or a tiger in the wild.
That's not the point for my concern that they survive in the wild. The point is that these creatures belong as part of an intact eco-system that we've decided to preserve on this planet for future generations. It's the right, just and ultimately healthy thing to do. |
