Ainu come to Sapporo from all over the island of Hokkaido to take part in the two-day celebration of their culture.
To this day, Native communities welcome the first salmon caught with singing and feasting and consider it a scout or chief. Every person in the family or tribe eats a share of the salmon flesh. The skeleton is lowered intact into the water so the spirit of the fish can lead his other salmon people back to the river.
