Without coral, Palmyra wouldn't exist. The coral reef matched pace with the sinking islands, like the one in this Palmyra photo, giving a foothold to the beaches, mature Pisonia forest, and shrub land which now shelter a variety of tropical life, birds to crabs. Some of the islets are "man-made," but all the 'land' is simply the wonder of coral.
