Stony Pink Fan Coral, Stylaster
This delicate lace-like coral is a close relative of the red fan coral pictured elsewhere. It is usually beautifully colored, and generally confined to deeper calmer waters, out of harms way. It doesn't require sunlight and lacks the symbiotic algae of typical reef building corals. Instead it has stinging cells on its branches that help the coral to capture small plankton and other food particles. Much remains to be discovered about this and the related red species.
