Western Reef Terrace
This unusually broad submerged reef covers an area of 3 by 2 miles, among the largest ever reported for an atoll. Almost entirely covered in living coral as shown in the 1987 photo, the warm waters of an El Nino later bleached and killed most of the corals in 1997-8. However, new corals are now rapidly re-populating the terrace, which may fully recover in another decade.
