Since reef growth can be thousands of feet thick, the reefs themselves provide great 3-dimensional relief and habitat diversity, from the shallows into deep seas, although the living reef builder's remains near the surface light source. As the light decreases and depth increases, the diversity shifts from a daylight to twilight setting; from marine life that favors abundant sunlight and wave energy to that which is adapted to calmer and shadier environments. The great western terrace at Palmyra, as pictured in this photo, is broad submerged reef varying from 30 to 60 feet in depth, and is Palmyra's largest reef.
