Great Frigate Bird, Fregata magnificens
Sailors -- impressed with the frigatebirds' kleptoparasitism (chasing other birds in flight, causing them to regurgitate food, then deftly catching it) -- named these birds after the pirate frigate ships. Frigates nest in trees where males puff up a brilliant red gular pouch during mating, and females select their favorite. Black feathers sheening metallic green and blue adorn this perfect flying machine.
