This symbiotic relationship makes coral vulnerable because the algae survive only within narrow bands of water temperatures, light, and water depths. Increases in temperature, sediment, and rising sea levels jeopardize coral reefs. Warm surface ocean waters may have caused corals to bleach (to die) at Palmyra in 1997-8, although corals are now showing spectacular recovery.
