King Kamehameha IV declared possession of Palmyra for the Kingdom of Hawaii. The King issued a commission to Captain Zenas Bent and Mr. Johnson B. Wilkinson, both Hawaiian citizens, to sail to Palmyra and to take possession of the atoll in the king's name. Bent later sold his interest in Palmyra to Wilkinson, who later willed his interest in the atoll to his wife, Kalama Wilkinson.
