American sea captain Edmond Fanning, aboard his ship Betsy, awoke one night with a strange premonition of danger. He ordered the helmsman to heave-to. The next morning, the imminent danger appeared: a reef, which sat directly ahead of the ship, certainly would have ripped the bottom out of Betsy. This was the northern edge of the coral reef that surrounds Palmyra Island. Due to improper reporting, Fanning was not credited with Palmyra's discovery.
